Jagex Announces New RuneScape Title Built on Unreal Engine
RS4: A New Chapter in RuneScape
Jagex confirmed that a fourth major installment in the RuneScape series is underway, using the Unreal Engine. The company will provide additional information about the project, currently named RS4, later this year. The announcement came during RuneFest, the annual gathering for the RuneScape community, where a one‑minute trailer was shown. While the clip offers limited specifics, it hints that players will ride and battle alongside dragons in Gielinor.
Breaking news:
Expanding the RuneScape Universe
RS4 will join RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds as the franchise’s major releases. A Jagex spokesperson clarified that RS4 is not intended to replace existing games but to enhance the overall experience. „We plan RS4 to exist alongside the others, offering another way to explore RuneScape and the world of Gielinor,” the representative said. Although set in the same universe, RS4’s timeline places it in the Sixth Age, several years after the events of Dragonwilds.
From Expansion to Stand‑Alone Game
Players will begin their journey in Ashenfall, a region first introduced in the Dragonwilds expansion, which marked Jagex’s initial foray into open‑world survival gameplay. Initially, RS4 was conceived as an extension of Dragonwilds, tentatively titled Shadows of Ashenfall. However, during development the team realized the project was evolving toward a format more akin to the company’s earlier MMOs, prompting a shift toward creating a standalone title, according to Polygon.
Future Plans and Parallel Projects
No official release date has been announced. Jagex described RS4 as „extremely ambitious” and noted that the game is still a few years away from completion. In the meantime, fans can look forward to a RuneScape animated series being developed by Lyrical Animation in partnership with YouTuber MoistCr1 TiKaL. Although the series is still in early stages, Jagex promised to share more details soon. Both the game and the series represent efforts to broaden the RuneScape universe across multiple content fronts.
