The M6 chip uses a 2nm manufacturing process, combining a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and a larger unified memory bandwidth to deliver impressive energy efficiency, says Sri Santhanam, Apple's Vice President of Silicon Engineering.
The M6 processor features a 12-core CPU complex, adding two extra cores compared to the M5. This results in a 30% increase in GPU performance for AI tasks compared to the M5, significantly improving the processing speed of prompt requests when using large language models on the device.

Apple acknowledges being behind in developing its own AI models but excels in using on-device technologies to enable users to use Face ID and Touch ID in a more secure and controlled manner, which would be a nightmare for security if processed in the cloud. Apple is currently developing powerful AI tools, which could be an opportunity to demonstrate its superiority in user security and control.
The new Mac Mini is available for pre-order starting at $899 and will be shipped after September 22.
