Apple Unveils Its Most Powerful Chip Ever in M5 Ultra and M6

The M6 chip uses a 2nm manufacturing

The M5 Ultra is a quad-die chip that combines two dual-die M5 Max chips. This design allows it to manage demanding AI tasks with ease. The chip boasts up to 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, along with a unified memory bandwidth of 1.2 TB/s, a 50% increase from the M3 Ultra.

The M5 Ultra is geared towards professionals who require intense compute tasks, such as complex 3D rendering, visual effects, and running cutting-edge AI models. However, it will also appeal to AI enthusiasts who develop programs. In contrast, the M6 processor is more suited for everyday users, according to Apple.

The M6 chip uses a 2nm manufacturing process, combining a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and a larger unified memory bandwidth to deliver impressive energy efficiency, says Sri Santhanam, Apple's Vice President of Silicon Engineering.

The M6 processor features a 12-core CPU complex, adding two extra cores compared to the M5. This results in a 30% increase in GPU performance for AI tasks compared to the M5, significantly improving the processing speed of prompt requests when using large language models on the device.

The company also highlights its development tools and frameworks, which automate performance optimization between CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, allowing developers to use Apple's built-in models, such as App Intents, to access Apple's Intelligence features or their own AI models to build and run powerful AI tasks entirely on the device.

Apple acknowledges being behind in developing its own AI models but excels in using on-device technologies to enable users to use Face ID and Touch ID in a more secure and controlled manner, which would be a nightmare for security if processed in the cloud. Apple is currently developing powerful AI tools, which could be an opportunity to demonstrate its superiority in user security and control.

The new Mac Mini is available for pre-order starting at $899 and will be shipped after September 22.
