Sony Posts Strong Profits As PS5 Game Sales Rise

Solid Financial Results Despite Hardware Shortages

Sony’s gaming division reported a remarkably solid quarter, navigating severe RAM shortages and heavy tariffs that inflated hardware prices and restricted availability. Console sales dropped to 2.6 million units in the second quarter of 2026, down from 4 million units during the same period in the previous year.

Despite this hardware decline, overall revenues grew by 9 percent, while profits surged by 83 percent year-over-year. Industry experts agree that falling console sales stem entirely from ongoing supply constraints rather than a lack of consumer interest.

Software performance was equally impressive, with game sales increasing by 9.8 million units compared to the previous quarter across both first-party and third-party titles. Digital downloads accounted for 78 percent of total full-game sales, rising from 72 percent during the corresponding period last year.

Software Sales And Digital Dominance

Total software revenue reached 708.5 billion yen (4.48 billion dollars) for the quarter, compared to 629.3 billion yen (3.98 billion dollars) in 2025. Meanwhile, network services expanded by 19.5 percent, generating 218.3 billion yen (1.38 billion dollars).

Individual titles performed exceptionally well. Marvel's Wolverine emerged as a certified hit, moving 2.4 million copies by November 4, roughly 50 days after its release. By comparison, Ghost of Yotei reached 3.3 million units sold following its debut on October 2, 2025.

Blockbuster Releases And Upcoming Milestones

With these figures recorded, Sony stands firmly on the verge of hitting the 100-million milestone for total PS5 sales. The platform has already achieved 97.9 million units sold since its launch in June 2020. This major milestone will undoubtedly be surpassed during the upcoming holiday shopping quarter.

However, challenges remain on the horizon. With the highly anticipated launch of GTA VI arriving on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in exactly two weeks—and pre-orders reportedly generating an astonishing 750 million dollars—serious questions remain about Sony's ability to supply enough hardware.

The premium PS5 Pro continues to be a massive commercial success, prompting some retailers to implement lottery systems to prevent scalpers. Sony previously stated it had secured enough memory to satisfy demand. More recently, however, the company warned retail partners that temporary market restrictions and high demand will continue to limit store inventories well into next year.
